It’s a fair challenge.
Clients should absolutely ask what value an agency brings to the table. If an agency claims to be great at everything, it risks being perceived as exceptional at nothing.
However, I believe this discussion often misunderstands what a modern full-service agency actually is.
Strategy Before Channels
When working with clients, we rarely start with a specific channel, deliverable, or tactic. We start with the objective.
What are we trying to achieve? What should people know, feel, or do?
Once the goal is clear, we can develop a creative concept that addresses the challenge. From there, we determine the most effective combination of channels, experiences, and touchpoints to bring that idea to life.
Today’s communication landscape is more interconnected than ever. A solution might involve a website, social media, paid media, an event, influencer collaborations, a digital product, a physical activation, traditional advertising, or a combination of several of these.
When strategy drives channel selection—not the other way around—clients receive recommendations based on what serves their objectives best.
Full-Service Does Not Mean Expert in Everything
To me, being a full-service agency has never meant mastering every discipline under one roof.
It means understanding the bigger picture.
A modern full-service agency recognizes how different channels, customer experiences, technologies, and disciplines interact. It can identify the capabilities required to solve a problem and bring together the right expertise, whether that expertise exists in-house or through trusted partners.
Many successful agencies today operate as network organizations. They combine internal talent with freelance specialists, consultants, and strategic partners who are selected based on the needs of each project.
That is not a weakness. It is often a strength.
The client benefits from a broader range of expertise without being limited by the structure of a single organization.
Connecting the Customer Experience
Marketing, communication, product development, and customer experience are increasingly intertwined.
Customers do not experience brands through isolated channels. They experience them as a connected ecosystem of interactions.
Every touchpoint either creates expectations or fulfills them. That is why someone needs to understand how the entire experience fits together and ensure that all parts are working toward the same objective.
This is where a full-service agency can play an important role—not as a supplier of everything, but as a strategic partner capable of connecting the dots.

Collaboration Creates Better Outcomes
I enjoy working with specialists. Deep expertise is invaluable.
But the best results rarely come from specialists working in isolation.
When strategists, creatives, designers, developers, analysts, and producers collaborate around a shared challenge, they bring different perspectives that strengthen the final outcome. Ideas become more robust, solutions become more innovative, and execution becomes more effective.
The value lies not only in the individual expertise but in how that expertise works together.
A Relationship Worth Investing In
Think about the people you trust most. You may have friends who share specific interests or expertise, but there are often a few who know you more deeply—your strengths, weaknesses, ambitions, and challenges.
Agency relationships can work the same way.
A full-service agency that develops a long-term understanding of a client’s business, brand, and customers is often in a stronger position to provide meaningful advice, challenge assumptions, and identify opportunities that others might miss.
This does not diminish the value of specialist agencies. Specialists play a critical role and often bring unmatched depth within their fields.
But when the challenge requires multiple disciplines to work together, a strategic full-service partner can create value that is greater than the sum of its individual capabilities.
That is why I continue to believe there is a strong case for the modern full-service agency.
